Interview with Sophie (28), Rotterdam
On how she emptied her skincare cabinet and discovered the problem was the water
Tell me, how did your skincare story begin?
I was never one to spend hours on skincare. I thought it was all way too much hassle and didn't believe you needed twenty steps for healthy skin. But then my skin suddenly became super dry and red, especially after showering. I thought: okay, apparently I need skincare.
What did you do then?
That's when I completely fell into that skincare rabbit hole. I bought everything I saw on TikTok and Instagram. Serums, toners, creams from brands that promised to make your skin glow. Some products were ridiculously expensive, but I thought: if it works, it's worth it. At first, it seemed to improve, but after a while, my skin actually became more sensitive. I got red spots, it stung, and nothing felt good anymore.
When did you decide to quit?
One morning I looked in the mirror and thought, what am I doing? My skin looked dull, and I felt like I was slathering my face with chemical junk. When I read what all those products actually contained, I was shocked. So much alcohol and perfume that only dried out your skin. That same day, I literally threw everything in the trash.
What did you do next?
I just wanted some peace and quiet. No more ten steps, no more expensive products. Just water. But that didn't work either. After showering, my skin still felt tight and sensitive. I started to wonder if it might be due to something other than my products.
How did you find out it was on the water?
I saw a video online about hard water and how it can disrupt your skin's natural balance. Then everything clicked. I live in Rotterdam, and apparently the water here is quite hard. I read about Klense and that their filters remove chlorine and metals from shower water. It made so much sense that I ordered one right away.
What did you notice then?
Within a few days, my skin felt different. No longer tight after showering, just soft and calm. After a week, the difference was truly noticeable. I now only use one simple cream, and my skin is better than when I had that whole cabinet full of products.
How do you view skincare now?
I believe it all starts with what comes out of your tap, not what you put on it. Pure water is truly the foundation. My skin doesn't need ten products, just healthy food and clean water.
