Interview with Emily (29), Toronto
About how she emptied her skincare cupboard and discovered that the real problem was the water.
Tell me, how did your skincare story begin?
I was never someone who spent hours on skincare. I always thought it was way too much effort and didn’t believe you needed twenty steps just to have healthy skin. But at some point my skin suddenly became really dry and red, especially after showering. That’s when I started thinking: okay, maybe I actually do need skincare.
What did you do back then?
I completely fell into the skincare rabbit hole. I bought everything I saw on TikTok and Instagram. Serums, toners, creams from brands that promised glowing skin. Some of those products were ridiculously expensive, but I thought: if it works, it’s worth it.
At first my skin seemed to improve a little, but after a while it actually became more sensitive. I started getting red spots, my skin would sting, and nothing felt right anymore.
When did you decide to quit?
One morning I looked in the mirror and honestly thought: what am I doing?
My skin looked dull, and I felt like I was just layering my face with chemicals. When I started reading the ingredient lists of all those products, I was shocked. So much alcohol and fragrance that can actually dry out your skin.
That same day I literally threw everything away.
What did you do after that?
I just wanted to give my skin a break. No more ten-step routines, no more expensive jars. Just water.
But that didn’t work either. After showering my skin still felt tight and sensitive. That’s when I started wondering if the problem wasn’t my skincare products at all.
How did you find out it was the water?
I saw a video online explaining how hard water can disrupt your skin’s natural balance.
That’s when everything suddenly made sense. I live in Toronto, and I learned that the water here can contain minerals and chlorine that can be harsh on your skin.
While researching, I came across Klense and their filter shower heads that remove chlorine and metals from shower water. It sounded so logical that I decided to try it.
What did you notice after that?
Within a few days my skin already felt different. It didn’t feel tight after showering anymore, just soft and calm.
After about a week the difference became really noticeable. Now I only use one simple moisturizer, and my skin honestly looks better than when I had an entire cupboard full of products.
How do you look at skincare now?
For me it starts with what comes out of your shower, not with what you put on your skin.
Clean water is the foundation. My skin doesn’t need ten products. It just needs healthy food, simple care, and clean water.
